There is part of the telling of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi when Pinocchio becomes a donkey, unbeknownst to him, by an old donkey salesman promising small children a place where they will never have to work, only play. Once in the land of toys or Paese dei Bilocchi, he goes to sleep and is made into a donkey for sale. He is sold to a circus ringleader and works entertaining young children, as a puppet of his master you might say.
But my favorite part is that Pinocchio never lost his resolve to find his babbo with his kind Fairy with the Turquoise Hair always watching out for him.
