StoryCamp Disco Summer Gouache Residency: The Natural World is The World

A week-long intensive working with gouache, water-paint and picture-making with me to learn and practice the ins-and-outs in real time with real help and real fun! We'll use both gouache and watercolor together so you can discover their differences and similarities and explore how you might use the two in tandem through the lens of The Natural World and the imagination.

I'm in love with the opaqueness of gouache and the lightness of the transparency of watercolor and love to use them together to translate what I see in the natural world. In this intensive residency, you'll get three two-hour sessions of workshops and each will be recorded in case you cant make it our just want to watch over again. You'll also get a dedicated SLACK group to share work, inspiration and encouragement, get and receive feedback from me and the group and build community in the virtual space of real art-makers making art. PLUS A BONUS 1-hour Paint-Along Q & A session to paint together and ask questions about anything on July 28th

We’ll play with materials and make color sing and challenge our own ideas about what it is to interpret the natural world in water + color.

We’ll examine three subjects closely:
DAY 1: the summer sea
DAY 2: the night sky
DAY 3: bodies that fly

Each subject will be explored through the (very fun) lens of imagination with surprising projects as we get to know the properties of gouache and watercolor together. We'll create unexpected color palettes, learn new secrets about color mixing, experiment with opaqueness, transparency and layering techniques, consider form and composition, learn rules and break them, and practice our brushwork to find our own unique beautiful textures and new ways to move gouache on paper. You'll learn my secret sauce ways of loosening up to create gorgeous and fun work and leave this workshop having learned to honor your individual intuitive techniques and personal visions to create extraordinary instinctual pictures with confidence.

Beginning a month before class begins you'll receive a simple supply list and recommendations of my favorite watercolor supplies and books.
